I’m ready for winter already…
Or so I think anyway ;) Just when we started getting that delicious hot cocoa weather, Summer decided to poke her head back into the picture and as I sit here writing this, in mid-central Ohio, it is 73 degrees fahrenheit. It should be in the 50s right now, and I was kind of excited about moving up to the great cold north and now I’m baking in South Carolina weather. Maybe I brought it with me?
I thought I’d change things up a bit. I always get asked for tips, tutorials, colors I’ve used etc.. I’ve already pointed you guys to the absolute best place to go for in-depth coloring lessons over at KitandClowder.com plus our very own DT YouTube Queen Kim has loads of free coloring tutorials. But I don’t mind giving you a tip or two or sharing the colors I’ve used where possible. So let’s see how that works and if I’m able to keep up with it. This week I’ll be sharing the colors I’ve used and a little tip about creating snow…
Destiny Snow Faery
I actually used all Copic markers for this image so it makes listing the colors a bit easier =)

Background: B95, B93, B91, BG000 & White Sakura Gelly Roll Pen (for the snowflakes)
TIP: A white pen that writes opaque is really handy when it comes to alcohol markers (and watercolor paints!). I have several brands but my favorite is the Sakura Gelly Roll in white. It’s great for cleaning up mistakes, and for adding white after you have all of your coloring done. (Also for writing in your art journal and otherwise adding white to dark backgrounds) I’ve used it in Destiny Snow Faery to create the snow in the background. After I laid in the colors and blended them together, I went in with the Sakura pen and added little dots of different sizes over the background to create the effect of falling snow. Super easy right?
If you have trouble getting your hands on the Sakura Gelly Roll (or if you just want to try out another white pen) I also like the Uni-ball Signo white pens. None of the white pens I’ve come across are truly pure white but the Sakuras are closest that I can tell. The Signos also don’t seem as opaque as the Sakuras but it will work just as well. You just might have to do two coats with the Signos (be sure to let the first dry).
I colored this a few weeks ago, so can’t really say what colors I used. However, I do have a technique for you!
For the background I laid down the pink, pushing the color out a little willy-nilly around the edges. I let the pink dry (only takes a couple minutes) and then I went in with the green to add the dots of various sizes. Using pink and green in the background helped tie the image together. After that dried, I took 50% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) in an eyedropper and placed drops of alcohol around the background colors. I think it created a really cool texture effect. I have a video on the Faery Ink YouTube channel where you can see me use the rubbing alcohol technique if you’re interested =)
I hope you learned something new today!
